LEV

A heaviness settles over me pulling out of the driveway from Elysium—just like it always does. Only this time, the weight crushes my chest, making it harder and harder to breathe despite the crisp, fresh air floating around me.

I’m not in the headspace to process the current situation, nor am I inclined to hash this out with Daphne or my Gran today. Although, one of those women isn’t so easily put off. I can drive away from Daphne and Elysium, but I can’t say no when Gran demands my presence.

Fuck…

Daphne…

I scrub a hand over my beard, and that look she gave me from the front of the house as I drove away, her arms wrapped protectively around herself, flashes before my eyes and shreds my soul.

You’ve been a dick.

She doesn’t deserve any of this. She doesn’t deserve to be tied to and have to deal with a wanker like me for the rest of her life.

Selfish. Hard-headed. Set in my ways. Stubborn as the day is long…

Not my best qualities.

Plus, being the personal guard to the Crown Prince of Lovolia and in charge of his and his new wife’s safety isn’t exactly conducive to siring children and being home to tuck them into bed every night.

I have responsibilities that will always be top priority.

Even over the woman having your baby?

“Blyat!” I slam my hand against the steering wheel before raking it through my hair. The sea air swirls around me but does nothing to help blow away any of my frustration. “You’re a real fuck up.”

I can’t seem to do anything right. First, I failed Fyn. Then I made the bloody ridiculous decision to hook-up with Daphne. And now, I’m acting like a total wanker when it comes to dealing with the consequences.

How in the bloody hell am I supposed to be a father?

I don’t have time to consider the answer to that question. Tires squeal behind me, and a cacophony of horns blares. An engine revs.

What the fuck?

My eyes dart to the rearview mirror in time to catch a blacked-out SUV veering around a car a few hundred yards behind me. It barrels into oncoming traffic before jerking back into the proper lane and accelerating toward me.

“Shit!”

The driver must be under the influence.

Their erratic driving will cause a crash. Only the light traffic on the coastal road has prevented one from happening already. As soon as I can pull over, I’ll alert the police to ensure they stop the driver before any damage is done. The closer we get to the city, the more threat they’ll pose to residents and tourists.

I step on the accelerator, pressing it to the floor, trying to find somewhere to get off the road and out of their path. The engine purrs, and I take the next turn along the coast, passing the cove.

The SUV roars around the corner after me. It eats up the distance between us, like the driver is on a mission. This is no mere tourist who’s had too many drinks on the beach.
